What did we do:
1. We looked at the origins of Slavery in Egypt and difficulty with understanding and interpreting the term "slavery"
2. We looked at different theories of how the most iconic Egyptian Monuments were built -by slaves or not?
3. We will draw parallels between slavery in Egypt and modern servitude
Video explanation of the lesson
A slave -a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.
There were THREE types of slaves in Ancient Egypt:
1. Chattel slave (a slave as private property of a master) usually a foreign captive
2. Bonded labor ( a person who "sold" him/her self into slavery for a debt)
3. Forced labor (government could draft people to complete unpaid labor)
These slaves were paid a wage, depending on their skill level and social status for their work.
Masters
Masters of Ancient Egypt were under obligations when owning slaves. Masters were allowed to utilize the abilities of their slaves by employing them in different manners including domestic services (cooks, maids, brewers, nannies, etc.) and labor services (gardeners, stable hands, field hands, etc.). Masters also had the right to make the slave learn a trade or craft to make the slave more valuable. Masters were forbidden to force child slaves to harsh physical labor
