Review Questions from last class:
What tribe was located next and around Rome?
What tribe was located to the North or Rome? Which people (who belong to the major other civilization) lived to the south of Rome?
How many hills was Rome located on? Which river was Rome located on?
- Geography of Rome:
What tribe was located next and around Rome?
What tribe was located to the North or Rome? Which people (who belong to the major other civilization) lived to the south of Rome?
How many hills was Rome located on? Which river was Rome located on?
- Tell your partner the story of Rome’s foundation
- Which three time periods did we learn about in history of Rome?
- Which Three social classes existed in Early Republic? Explain each of the classes
- What was veto?
- Talk about the office of Consul and Senate. Who were tribunes? Talk about position of a Dictator
Task 1. Read the following information and complete notes in point form outlining the early victories of the Romans on the Italian peninsular
"Once it was united as one settlement, the city was a perfect base from which to wage wars on local tribes and to control the surrounding lands. From 753BCE to 509BCE (The time of the creation of the Republic) Rome was at war with its other neighbors, as it struggled to consolidate its position. It is likely that the mysterious Etruscans who ruledan area from the river Po to Campania, were in cotrol of Rome from about 600 BCE (7 Etruscan Kings)
Note: The Etruscuns were centered in Erturia (modern Tuscany), were not Latin by race and is believed that they came into Northern Italy from Asia Minor (present day Turkey -that is where the city of TROY was sacked and destroyed by the Mycenaean Greeks). Etruscuns may have taught Romans pottery and metal works)
After becoming a Republic in 509 BCE (Note: Greek Athenian leader Cleisthenes reforms in Athens -invention of demos or public and seeds of democracy in 508 BCE suspiciously coincided with creating of the Roman Republic, making the Roman Republic a one year YOUNGER)
Question to you: How likely was it that late Roman historians (during the times of Tyranny of the Empire) adjusted the dates to appear so that it was them who came up with the advances of the democratic institutions? Discuss with partner
The Etruscuns continued controlling the lands to the north of Rome while the Greeks colonized various city states alone the southern coast of Italy and the island of Sicily (REMEMBER: The Greeks never went in land anywhere -they liked the BEACH)
The Roman Republic relied on its citizens army -citizens were expected to serve. Patricians were generals and commanders (their sons were trained since childhood), and the plebeians were the foot soldiers. However some of the Rome's adversaries put bigger and better trained armies to combat them.
in 463 BCE the warlike tribse called the Volsci and the Aequi came within 3 miles (5 km) of the gates of Rome.
While the Romans were consolidating their power to the South and East, their main rival to the North -Etruscuns were under the constant threat from the Gaul in the North and Greeks in the South. Rome Explored this and went on to defeat the Etruscuns in major battles in 428BCE
In 390 the Gaul tribes invaded Rome and breached its walls. The Romans were awaken by the screaming Geese when the Gauls tried to scale the cliffs of Capitoline hill where most of teh surviving Romans hid. Note: Hence came the expression: "The cackling of geese saved Rome’General Camillus was given dictatorial powers and restored the confidence and power of Rome by destroying the Volsci and Aequi in 380 BCE. By 358 Rome re-established its links with other powerful Latin allies and now threatened to push the Gauls. By 293 another powerful tribe -the Samnites were defeated on the Adriatic coast of Italy
By 290s BCE Rome began confronting the Greek city states on the Italian peninsular
Answer the Question: What was happening in Greece during the time of the First Period of Roman expansion? (600-300 BCE)
What were the major events happening in Greece that you remember?
Who do you think was stronger -Rome or Greece by the time Pyrrhic wars between Rome and Greek city state Tarentium in Battle of Heraclea? Why?
HINT: Rome was expanding..and Greece was..(in 280s BCE)?
Task 2. Read a short story about Pyrrhus. (see below)
Watch a video about Pyrrhys and Pyrrhic wars.
After watching, explain to your partner:
A. Who was Pyrrhus and what does the expression "Pyrrhic victory" mean?

A. Where was Carthage? Why did Rome need to defeat Carthage?
B.What were the dates of the First, Second and Third Punic Wars?
C. What was corvus?
D. What was the result of the First Punic war?
E. How would facing Hannibal help Rome to create a better army in the future?
F. Roman Army Commanders would hold power of command on alternative days in the battles against Hannibal (to avoid one of them claiming victory and gaining to much power and prestige). What possible problems do you see with that system?
G. In the Battle of Cannae (Note: The Battle of Cannae (/ˈkæni, -eɪ, -aɪ/)[b] was a major battle of the Second Punic War that took place on 2 August 216 BC in Apulia, in southeast Italy. The army of Carthage, under Hannibal, surrounded and decisively defeated a larger army of the Roman Republic under the consuls Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro. It is regarded both as one of the greatest tactical feats in military history and as one of the worst defeats in Roman history.) Rome lost 50 000 men. Rome did not surrender and did not collapse. Compare the results and the casualties with the Persian defeats to Alexander in Issus and Guagamela. Why do you think Persians collapsed and Romans did not> What made Romans so tough?
H. What happened to Carthage after the 3d Punic war?

Task 3 Read the excerpt about Alexander's legacy and watch the videos below |
Alexander's legacy
"Perhaps the most significant legacy of Alexander was the range and extent of the proliferation of Greek culture," said Abernethy. "The reign of Alexander the Great signaled the beginning of a new era in history known as the Hellenistic Age. Greek culture had a powerful influence on the areas Alexander conquered."
Many of the cities that Alexander founded were named Alexandria, including the Egyptian city that is now home to more than 4.5 million people. The many Alexandrias were located on trade routes, which increased the flow of commodities between the East and the West.
"Goods and customs, soldiers and traders all mingled together," said Abernethy. "There was a common currency and a common language (Greek) uniting the many peoples of the empire. All religions were tolerated. It was to be a golden age that lasted from the death of Alexander in 323 B.C. until 31 B.C., the date of the conquest of the last Hellenistic kingdom by Rome, the Lagid kingdom of Egypt."
After reading this excerpt and watching the video below answer this question: What does the development of the modern Western civilization owe to Alexander?
